HI Everyone

I am an Australian Kilby, settled originallyin teh Bathurst region of central New South Wales ( A big family). I am descended from William Kilby born c. 1836. Emigrated to Australia before 1864. Reason unknown. Married Elizabeth Elms at Kelso, Bathurst, New South Wales. Died at The Lagoon nr Bathurst 1908. Children John, Sarah Jane, Matilda, Maria, Henry, William and Susannah (b. btw 1864-1881). I am descended from Sarah Jane.

The most likely ancestry of my William is he was born in Brighton Sussex to Charles Kilby (b 1816 in Elstree Hertfordshire, son of John Kilbyof Aldenham) and Charlotte (b. 1814 Willesden). Chas Kilby and Charlotte Charles were married 1837 in St Pancras Middlesex. WIlliams younger siblings were all born in Elstree.

I am working to confirm this ancestry of my William born c. 1835. I am not 100% sure yet , but it is the best of a bunch of about five possibles. My William was very elusive when he got to Australia  and his Marriage, and Death certificates gave no clues as to his origin. Only the names of his offspring provide me with clues.  

Can any one help with any info about the Elstree/Aldenham branch. Does anyone know of a William b 1836 that emigrated to Aus. He is unlikely to have been a convict as the dates/places don't match the 3 possible WIliam Kilby convicts.

I have found fouond and documented many of Williams descendants in Australia

I, too, am an Australian decended from a Kilby.  I don't know whether my line connects to yours though ??    My 4th great-grandfather was John Kilby, born abt 1749, in Middlesex i believe.  He married Ann Gregory.  One of their sons, William, born abt 1782, was my 3rd great-grandfather.  His first wife, Ann Ricket, was burned to death.   He subsequently married Sarah Charlotte, born in Willesden abt 1786.  William and Sarah's daughter, Sarah Kilby, born Willesden 1820, married  William Jackman of Willesden.  They were my great-great-grandparents.  Their great-grandson, Albert Morgan Jackman, emigrated to Queensland in 1923, where he worked on the dairy farm named 'Brendale' just north of Brisbane at Strathpine.  Albert 'Bert' was my dad.

However, it doesn't seem as if my line is connected to yours.

My name is Mandie Christie (nee Parckar).  I live in Brisbane Australia too (emigrated 8 months ago from London), and I have recently learnt that my GGG grandfather was an Edward Kilby of Hounslow Middlesex, who changed his name to his mothers maiden name of Parker in 1865.

Ben, I'm afraid I don't have any info to help you with your query, but I'm wondering if there is a connection with our trees?  Do you recognise any of the following?

I know that Edwards father was a William Kilby born about 1804 in Elstree Hertfordshire.  William was married to an Ann Parker later in life, but looks like he had a first wife called Ann too, and a daughter Caroline (not confirmed yet).  During the 1840's onwards they lived in Middlesex (mainly Hounslow).  I am trying to find a link to an Elstree connection.

Ally - do you know where in Middlesex your Kilbys are from?

I think I have found a link between your William Kilby and mine.  I believe my GGG Grandfather William was your Charles' brother.  Born in Elstree to John & Sarah Kilby.

Have you found your answer on why Charles emigrated yet?

I am a Roberts, but my great, great, great, great grandmother was a MARY KILBY (born circa 1815 in the UK)

She arrived in Australia on The Ida with her two sons James 22 and Thomas William 18 (my great, great grandfather)
in 1864. They settled in the New England District.

I have Thomas' Marriage Certificate and various familiy certificates/documents from NSW BDM and State Records from
Thomas on but have no info whatsoever on Mary Kilby (Roberts) or her husband ? James Roberts.

Don't know why Mary and the boys came to Australia or what happened that James didn't come.

Any of the Aussie Kilbys have any info?

The 1861 Census has:
Mary ROBERTS b 1811 Islington, Middlesex - widow
James ROBERTS b 1841 Holloway, Middlesex - painter and glazier
Thomas ROBERTS b 1845 Holloway, Middlesex - warehouse boy
Address: 1 Highbury Crescent West, Islington
Ref: RG09, Piece 139, Folio 13, page 17

Possible marriage (from FreeBMD):
Sep 1839 Quarter
James ROBERTS Islington 3 169
Mary KILBY Islington 3 169
These are not matched pairs (ie people with these names got married in this quarter in Islington - they could have married other people) so I'm afraid you would have to buy a certificate for one of the names to check if correct.

I hope that the above info is useful but obviously ROBERTS is a popular name and possibly none of the above could relate to your family - hopefully some other info you have might help in matching things up.  The 1841 reference could be a different family or perhaps James had an earlier marriage.
